Basic Pen Workshop 1
Our introductory woodturning workshop is the perfect first step for students interested in learning a hands-on craft. This 90-minute session allows instructors to assess each student’s skills and readiness for future courses, while students create their very own handcrafted pen to take home. No experience required—just a spirit of creativity and curiosity!

Designed for students who are not advancing to higher-level turning due to grade requirements, as well as for those who prefer to continue honing their skills through pen turning. This course provides ongoing hands-on experience while reinforcing craftsmanship, focus, and confidence.

In this hands-on two-hour session, students will learn to turn a classic spinning top while continuing to develop precision, control, and technique. Completion of Basic Pen Workshops 1 & 2 is required.

In this hands-on two-hour session, students will learn to turn a candle holder for a tea light while continuing to refine precision, control, and creative expression. Introduction to Pen Making Course (Grades 6–12)
Program Duration: 4 weeks
Schedule: One session per week – 2 hours per session

Program Overview
This four-week course is designed to teach students every step required to successfully create a handcrafted pen. Meeting once a week for two hours, students will develop essential skills including lathe safety, tool control, shaping, sanding, and finishing. The structured progression allows students to build confidence and craftsmanship while completing a high-quality pen and preparing for more advanced woodturning projects.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this program, students will:
- Practice woodturning safety with confidence.
- Identify and use basic woodturning tools and equipment.
- Selection of woods for pens.
- Measuring, cutting, drilling, and gluing pen blanks.
- Barrel trimming pen blanks before turning.
- Apply finishing techniques to create a polished project.

Youth Workshop FAQs
Our hands on woodturning workshops take place at 1404 El Nido Dr in Fallbrook, California. Directions are on our home page our you can click here.
Beginner pen and small project workshops start at $50, private one on one sessions are $100, the two day bowl introduction is $250 and the three day advanced bowl workshop is $500. Cash payment is accepted now. Payment via PayPal/card will be available shortly.
Just bring yourself, you will have access to all tools, wood and safety gear, we only ask that you complete the interest form so we can prepare for your skill level.
Closed toe shoes are required and we recommend comfortable long sleeve shirts and pants that can handle a bit of wood dust. No loose fitting clothes.
Most workshops are open to anyone aged 14 and up, and our Home School Program welcomes students ages 10 to 18 with parental consent.
No prior experience is necessary, our beginner classes cover tool safety and basic cuts and we offer progressive workshops for every skill level.
Students must:

Hands-on Youth Woodturning Programs
Warrior Oak Woodturning in Fallbrook offers safe, skill building youth woodturning classes for grades 6 to 12 taught by Warrior Oak’s certified instructors. Pacific Coast Academy and other organizations partner with us to enroll students while our team leads every session. Learn the art of turning from beginner pens to advanced bowls using local and exotic hardwoods with guidance from Ernesto Aquino, then browse the schedule to reserve a weekday or weekend spot.

Youth Multi-Week Programs
Build real lathe skills in a progressive series for grades 6 to 12. Choose a 4 week sampler, an 8 week maker track, or a 16 week studio intensive that moves from tool safety and basic cuts to bowls, finishing, and design. All programs run at our Fallbrook studio with small class sizes and all materials provided.
